2 The Last Ice Age The Earth has endured long periods, called Ice Ages, during which temperatures dropped and slow moving masses of ice called glaciers formed.

3 The Last Ice Age The last Ice Age was two million years ago, reaching its height in 18,000 B.C. By 10,000 b.c., our world looked much the way it does now and had a climate similar to today’s.

4 Adapting to Varied Environments
As modern humans migrated, they settled in a variety of environments. Each new place had its own climate, plants, and animals.

5 Adapting to Varied Environments
With each move, people had to adapt, or change their way of life, to suit each new environment. Examples of adapting are finding out which plants could be eaten and how to hunt different animals.

6 Staying Warm Ice Age people built huts out of mammoth bones and hides.
They also sewed furs and hide together to warm themselves.

8 Forming Larger Communities
Some adapted to change by forming large communities. Advantages of Forming Large Communities: They can work together to kill large animals. They can better defend their communities.

9 Forming Larger Communities
Growing communities organized into clans, or groups of families with a common ancestor. Clans would be made up of People. Clan leaders took on decision making roles.

10 Forming Larger Communities
Everywhere human society developed networks of clans families played a vital role in creating strong communities.

Stone Age communities began to trade with one another for special stones and shells. They also traded information about finding food.
