Notes – Genetics 1
2
Heredity The study of genetics & how traits are passed on to the next generation of organisms (kids)
3
DNA A long molecule that contains the genetic code of each organism
holds instructions for making all the proteins.
4
adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine
Base pairs that are used to make up the genetic codes or combinations of genes
5
Genes Shorter segments of DNA that contain specific instructions for making a protein
6
Proteins The building blocks of traits.
Gives cells structure, shape, processes, and involved in the expressions of traits.
7
Ribosomes Builds the protein from the directions they get from the genes
8
Nucleus Where DNA (genome) is stored in Eukaryotic cells.
9
chromosomes DNA that is folded up so that it fits into the nucleus
10
Genome Complete set of genetic instructions for making the entire organism (23 pairs of chromosomes for humans)
11
A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring (not just humans).
Ex: eye color, hair color, heart size, muscle structure, number of legs, etc. Traits OR phenotype
