Chlamydia Most common STI in Canada
Highest infection is in 14 to 24 year olds Spread through sex Symptoms There are not really any! After 2-6 weeks will experience burning during intercourse, while peeing, bleeding while not on period Itching around penis Long term Lead to PID, can cause abcesses, long term pain, scarring and infertility

Can be treated with antibiotics, you should get checked for STI when you have a yearly check up or if you have warning signs

Gonorrhea (sometimes called the Clap in the olden days)
Nickname “the Clap” or “the Drip” Symptoms include Discharge from penis or vagina Burning or pain during sex or urination Bleeding or stomach pain, rectal pain, itching Long term Increased risk of HIV Scarring in fallopian tubes Miscarriage Inflammation of prostate Infertility in men Blindness and joint pain

Human papilloma virus (HPV)
One of the most commonly transmitted STI Some types can cause cervical cancer and genital warts Can be spread thorough skin contact so comdoms are not effective Is a vaccine Symptoms Not readily apparent Can see genital warts (look like baby cauliflower) Removed with cryotherapy (freezing) Can cause mouth and throat and anal cancer in men

Herpes 2 types of herpes Spread through skin to skin contact
Looks like blisters 70% of people have herpes and no symptoms, then they spread it Symptoms can include Painful sores in genital area Sores on mouth Fever Muscle and joint pain Sore lymph glands Pain while peeing or sore back

HIV/AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus
Kills cells vital to our immune system You actually get sick from other illnesses because your body cannot fight them off How do I get it? Unprotected sex Infected blood or blood products Tatooing or skin piercing (needles) Accupuncture (needles) Sharing drug needles Children can get it during childbirth from an infected mother

HIV You may not know you have this disease for years, yet still infect others Shows up as fever, joint and muscle pain, swollen glands, sore throat, low energy, rapid weight loss, vomiting, nausea Long term risk of stroke, heart disease, accelerated aging, osteoporosis, pneumonia There is not a cure Managed today with a HUGE collection of pills, very expensive and still a death sentence in other countries without good health care.

Syphilis 3 stages 1. painless open sores in genital, anus or mouth
2. rash, flu-like symptoms Headache, fever, weight loss sore throat 3. soft spongy balls of inflammation all over body , internal bleeding, enlargement of spleen and liver, deformations, loss of motor function, seizures, dementia, aneurysm, death

Hepatitis B Sexually transmitted, by sharing needles (like HIV)
Toothbrushes, nail scissors, needle stick, even breastfeeding or having blood splashed in eye or nose or mouth ***is a vaccination Few symptoms early, headache, weakness, fatigue, abdominal pain or rash Once infected you may develop jaundice, liver infection fibrosis cirrhosis of liver, liver failure

Hepatitis B NO CURE!!!! Can be treated with antivirals, within a week, usually passes within 6 months

Toothbrushes, nail scissors, needle stick, even breastfeeding or having blood splashed in eye or nose or mouth Symptoms include Fatigue, dark urine, mausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice Long term: jaundice, cirrhosis cancer, shut down liver, builds a toxin in the brain that will cause disorientation, leads to heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, gallstones

Trichomoniasis Caused by a parasite
Symptoms in women Frothy green vaginal discharge Odour and itching and pain in vaginal area Buring during urination Symptoms in men Discharge from penis, burning during urination, irritation on tip of penis

Trichomoniasis Medication is available, be careful of reinfection if sexual activity happens during course of treatment

Pubic lice Tiny wingless insects Also called “crabs”
Can be found in pubic hair, or armpit, chest, eyelashes Spread through direct physical contact Towels, clothing and bedding Symptoms include Itching around pubic areas Redness and irritation

Pubic Lice Can be treated with special shampoos and by shaving and removal by hand ANYONE who shares towels or bedding should be treated (just like regular lice)

Scabies Skin condition caused by a parasite
Spread by skin to skin contact Contact must be prolonged Can be spread by bedding, towels, can live on cloth for 3 to 4 days Rash Intense itching Especially at night Looks like irregular tracks or tiny blisters
