What are Shape Memory Alloys
Metals that, after being strained and heated at a certain temperature, return to their original shape. Nitinol (NiTi): Nickel -Titanium Naval Ordnance Laboratory Other SMAs include Cu-Zn-Al-Ni and Cu-Al-Ni
3
SMA History 1930s - SMA first accounted for in copper zinc alloys by Arne Ölander 1960s - William J. Buehler and fellow researches at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory discovered the shape memory effect in nickel and titanium. 1970s - NiTi first reported in medical applications 1980s - Experimental orthopedic and orthodontic applications 1990s - the shape memory effect in Nitinol gained greater attention and used in stent applications and even greater in medicine.

Phase Change? First Thought:
Solid to Liquid: Molecular rearrangement occurs in liquid state Difference: SMA doesn’t need to revert to liquid for molecular rearrangement to occur

Disadvantages of Shape Memory Alloys
More expensive to manufacture and machine than steel and aluminum Fatigue under multiple cyclic loading 8% Maximum strain recovery Difficulties programming intermediate motions
