2 Outline Introduction – How’d we get here and where are we now?
Discussion with Dr. Edelstein What can the Society do for you? What is the role of the Society within the Academy? What are the individual opportunities for Academy representation? Goals and objectives of the NMSO Bylaws/Budget Now what?

3 Introduction The Board of Governors (BOG) – “Grassroots” member network made up of society representatives acting as an advisory committee to the AAO-HNS Board of Directors There are about 80 local and state otolaryngology societies represented at the BOG 47 states are represented and unfortunately New Mexico is one of those 3 that are missing! Dr. Edelstein and I came from the same medical school and ran into each other at the Academy last year…He put me up to the challenge of getting NM back on track.

6 Dr. David Edelstein Chief of Otolaryngology – Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital Professor/Academic appointments at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, NYU & Mount Sanai School of Medicine Teaching Award in Otolaryngology – MEETH, Distinguished Alumni – Boston University School of Medicine Memberships – Trilogical Society, ARS, AAO-HNS, AAFPRS, American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy Clinical focus in rhinology and sleep

8 Mission Statement To advance the practice of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery in the sate of New Mexico through collaboration, education and initiative.

9 Mission Statement Collaboration – Promote open communication, mentorship and networking within our specialty throughout New Mexico and the AAO-HNS Education – Provide education to the members during business dinners (guest speakers), using the website and electronic newsletters. Mentor undergraduate and medical students as well as residents through career guidance and research Initiative – Advocacy; taking a role in the economic and political aspects of our field at a local, state and national level.

President/Governor Governor for BOG, leads meetings, liaison between officers/members, appoints membership committee and ad hoc subcommittee members Secretary-Treasurer Manages the budget, obtains sponsors, assures members have paid dues, appoints nominating committee Program Chair Organizes business dinners, arranges for guest speaker, arranges virtual meetings if needed

Governor for BOG/President; Liaison between Societies and Board of Directors of AAO-HNS Legislative Affairs Committee Rep; Addresses issues relative to the law at the local, state, regional and national level. Legislative Advocacy Project 535 and State Trackers Socioeconomic Grass Roots Committee Rep; Addresses issues relative to insurance, reimbursement, billing, etc at the local, state, regional and national level Regulatory Advocacy Young Physicians Section Rep; Addresses issues common to otolaryngologists <40 years of age or within first 8 years of practice

Academy Reps are expected to attend at least one of the two following meetings in order to sit in on their respective committee meeting: Annual AAO-HNS fall meeting/expo AND/OR Spring Leadership Meeting (FREE/NO REGISTRATION FEE) (Ideally you’d make both)!

Membership Committee Appointed by President Organizes membership lists, contacts, applications Nominating Committee Appointed by Secretary-Treasurer Nominates 2 members for Program Chair and Academy Representatives each year

16 Budget – Estimated for 1 year
Credit Costs Sponsors: $3500 Business: (website/bank account/postage) ~$800 Membership: $150/member (30 members) = $4500 Guest Speaker Travel: $3000 Dinner/Business Meeting: $3600 (30 members) TOTAL $8000 $7400

17 Budget/Sponsors Our industry sponsors how we curb the cost of membership Currently our sponsors include: Cochlear Oticon Acclarent Entellus Intersect, Smith-Nephew have verbal commitments Platinum, gold and silver levels: booths at business dinner, logo on website, etc.

18 Now What? Sign up for membership! RSVP for October 7th meeting
$150/year I NEED ADDRESSES! RSVP for October 7th meeting

19 Now What? Nominate yourself or someone else for the following positions: President, Secretary-Treasurer, Program-Chair (1-3 year commitment) Leg Affairs, SEGR, YPS Representative (2 year commitment) President will be Governor Notify the person you’ve nominated (once the nominee has accepted) The nominee needs to with a short paragraph explaining why he/she would like this position

20 Now What? Nominees must submit acceptance/paragraph by July 5th
Watch for SURVEY MONKEY! Goal for 20 member response to survey for election of officers/reps

21 Now What? If you are an Academy Rep: PLEASE go to the annual meeting this fall and sit in on your committee meeting. You will be expected to update the Society during the Oct 7th meeting.
