Mae Cyfryngau Cymdeithasol wedi trawsnewid y modd y mae cymdeithas yn cyfathrebu. Mae yna lawer o fanteision gan gynnwys rhoi llais i bobl oedd heb lais yn y gorffennol – yn enwedig ein plant a phobl ifanc ac oedolion diamddiffyn. Serch hynny, mae cyflymder esblygiad yr amgylchedd wedi amlygu materion diogelu presennol, gan gynnwys y rhai sy’n gysylltiedig ag Iechyd Meddwl a Lles. Social Media has transformed the way society communicates. It brings a variety of benefits including giving a voice to those who may not previously have been heard - none more so than our Children and Young People (C&YP) and Vulnerable Adults. However, the speed at which the online environment has evolved has also magnified existing safeguarding issues, including those associated with Mental Health & Wellbeing (MH&W).

Technology is an integral part of modern society, especially for C&YP and Vulnerable Adults who are typically hugely invested in its day- to-day application. Adverse effects of Social Media and their indicators can be numerous, developing and may include: online addiction; anxiety; low self-esteem; online bias; isolation; oversharing; jealousy/envy/unrealistic expectations; FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out); online bullying or hate crime, depression and self-harm.

Mae cyfryngau cymdeithasol wedi’u dylunio i sicrhau bod defnyddwyr yn ymgysylltu â’r platfform. Gan hynny, mae’n arddangos ‘dyluniad dylanwadol’ - cysyniad lle defnyddir technoleg i ddylanwadu ar ymddygiad defnyddiwr. As such, it demonstrates ‘persuasive design’ – a concept whereby technology is used to influence user behaviour. The ‘Streaks’ feature on Snapchat is an example of how this concept is employed to significant effect and the consequent impact this can have introduces huge pressures on Children, Young People and Adults to maintain continual interaction. Persuasive design, alongside receiving positive reception of posts, are often highlighted as key factors encouraging ‘online addiction’

Mae ymchwil yn awgrymu y bydd plentyn nodweddiadol yn ei arddegau yn gwirio ei ffôn tua 150 gwaith y dydd ar gyfartaledd (bod ofn colli allan). Goblygiad llai amlwg o’r angen i ryngweithio’n barhaol ydi'r effaith ar hunan-barch a phryder. Gall pobl ifanc deimlo eu bod angen anfon negeseuon i’w ffrindiau agos yn gyson er mwyn cynnal cyfeillgarwch agos yn eu bywyd go iawn. Research suggests a typical teenager will check their phone around 150 times per day on average (FOMO). A less obvious consequence of the need for continual interaction is the impact on self-esteem and anxiety. YP may feel the need to constantly message their close friends in order to maintain close friendships in real life.

Peidiwch â gadael i’r dechnoleg dynnu eich sylw – mae pryderon iechyd meddwl yn faterion diogelu ac ni ddylent aros. Mae trafod y mater yn gam pwysig ond sicrhewch eich bod yn trafod gyda’ch rheolwr neu arweinydd diogelu am y llwybrau cefnogaeth a ffafrir. Do not be distracted by the technology - mental health concerns are a safeguarding issue and should not wait. Discussing the issue is an important step but ensure you consult your manager or safeguarding lead on preferred support routes.

A fyddwn i’n gwybod sut i ymateb yn briodol i bryder am iechyd meddwl a lles a allai gynnwys elfen ar-lein? Ydi fy mholisïau a gweithdrefnau ar gyfer iechyd meddwl a lles yn ystyried agweddau ar-lein? Pa becynnau gwaith ar-lein gan y GIG allai helpu pobl ifanc gyda phroblemau hunan-niweidio a phryder? Would I know how to appropriately respond to a MH&W concern that may include an online element? Do my organisational polices & procedures for MH&W consider online aspects? What online NHS tools may help young people with self-harm and anxiety?
