Figure 1 (A) Double staining in mouse fundus of the active phosphorylated form of Bmp specific Smads 1, 5, and 8 (pSmad1,5,8) in brown and the parietal cell marker H+K+ATPase in red shows that BMP signaling can be detected in the pit cells and throughout the epithelium of the fundic gland. (B) Parietal cells show particularly high levels of Smad 1, 5, and 8. (C) A simplified model of the interaction of Bmp signaling and growth factor signaling in the regulation of parietal cell fate. Activation of Smad1 is required for parietal cell differentiation and accumulation. Smad1 is activated through phosphorylation by the Bmp receptor complex. Phosphorylation Erk at a different amino acid results in inhibition of Smad1. Gastroenterology , DOI: ( /j.gastro ) Copyright © 2010 AGA Institute Terms and Conditions
