PEP uP Protocol:
Enhanced Protein-Energy Provision via the Enteral Route in Critically Ill Patients
More calories and protein for ICU patients for better clinical outcomes……
Start feeds at goal rate in stable patients, 25 mls/hr
Use a concentrated well-tolerated formula (Peptamen 1.5)
Order feeds by 24 hr volume, not by hourly rate
RN sets the feed rate, and catches-up missed volume
Start motility agents immediately, not waiting for high gastric residuals
Start BeneProtein supplement immediately
Trickle feeds in unstable patients
Increase threshold for gastric residuals to 250 mls
RN reports adequacy of nutrition intake on daily rounds
Just say ‘NO’ to NPO!
