And his bloody laws And you
Newton And his bloody laws And you
2
A bit of history here: The great and all powerful Aristotle
The natural state of an object is at rest Large objects “want” to be at rest more Book and paper demos
3
Galileo The natural state of an object is
What ever it is doing at that moment
4
Newton’s 1st Law: An object in motion, remains in motion, unless acted on by an external force. Demo: Student on hover craft
5
Newton’s 2nd Law: The sum of all forces on an object =
Mass x acceleration ΣF = ma Demo: apply same force to carts w/ students of different masses Demo: Have those students push off each other Demo: students with same mass push each other Demo: spring scales
6
Newton’s 3rd Law: For every force, there is an equal and opposite force Demo: Student on cart with books Demo: Student on cart pushes against wall Demo: Student on hover craft with books Demo: ? Turning chair with lg. gyro. ?
7
THESE 3 LAWS ALWAYS APPLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When you run, you apply a force to the earth but because Earth mass is so Large, acceleration is very small F = ma
8
Therefore: Galileo was correct
Aristotle is still great (if only misguided at times – like this one).
