Purpose The purpose of writing these poems is to demonstrate some CREATIVE WRITING. Be Creative and to try have some fun with this! This assignment should be done without ANY assistance from the Teacher or Classmates besides just basic clarification. You need to be able to demonstrate this Creative writing ON YOUR OWN.

Task There are 8 poem structures. You will probably have time to complete about 4 of them. Pick 1 to get started, and write your poem on a piece of legal paper. The bottom half of the paper should be left blank so that you can include a picture or visual. EVERY poem needs a picture relating to the poem that you have created!

1. Sonnet A poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, in English typically having ten syllables per line.

2. Limerick A humorous, frequently bawdy, verse of three long and two short lines rhyming aabba, popularized by Edward Lear.

3. Haiku 5 syllables 7 syllables
A Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five, traditionally evoking images of the natural world. Does NOT have any Rhyme schemes but has a Syllable Scheme 5 syllables 7 syllables

4. Couplet A couplet is a pair of successive lines of metre in poetry. A couplet usually consists of two successive lines that rhyme and have the same metre. A couplet may be formal (closed) or run-on (open)

5. Acrostic An acrostic is a poem in which the first letter of each line spells out a word, message or the alphabet. The word comes from the French acrostiche.

6. Descriptive Poetry Descriptive poetry is the name given to a class of literature that belongs mainly to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries in Europe. From the earliest times, all poetry not subjectively lyrical was apt to indulge in ornament which might be named descriptive.

7. Hyperbole Each line consists of an exaggerated statement or claim that is not meant to be taken literally. Should be describing the Topic or Title of your Poem.

8. Metaphor (Kind of Tricky!)
A Metaphor is a figure of speech that makes an implicit, implied, or hidden comparison between two things that are unrelated, but which share some common characteristics. In other words, a resemblance of two contradictory or different objects is made based on a single or some common characteristics.
