1 Ecosystem Organization
Chapter 2.1 By Ms. Anderson

2 Ecosystem Organization
An ecosystem is made up of all the LIVING (Biotic) and NON-LIVING (abiotic) parts of an area. As you revel each picture on this slide have students identify if it is a picture or living or non-living objects.

3 Ecosystem Organization
The living parts of an ecosystem are called BIOTIC FACTORS. Biotic factors include any item that comes from a living organism, like eggs, fur, feces, feathers, snake skin, etc.

4 Ecosystem Organization
The non- living parts of an ecosystem are called ABIOTIC FACTORS. Abiotic factors include temperature, wind, sunlight, fresh water, salt water, rainfall, etc. in an area

5 Ecosystem Organization
The organisms in an ecosystem can be organized into groups. From simple to complex, the groups are: Organism (Individual) Population Community Ecosystem/Biome Biosphere

6 Ecosystem Organization
Organism: an individual member of a species. Example: An elk

7 Ecosystem Organization
Population: a group of individuals of the same species that live together. Example: Herd of elk

8 Ecosystem Organization
Community: All of the populations of species that live and interact in an area. Example: Mountain animals--eagles, elk and deer, wolves, bears, mountain lions

9 Ecosystem Organization
Ecosystem or Biome: Community of organisms plus the abiotic environment of the community. Example: Mountain animals and forest climate

10 Ecosystem Organization
Biosphere: The part of Earth where life exists. (From the deepest parts of the ocean to high in the air).
