2 Wave Characteristics Most ocean waves derive their energy from the wind Wave height: the vertical distance between trough and peak Wavelength: horizontal distance between two successive troughs or peaks

3 Length of time wind is blowing
The size of the wave depends on 3 factors: Wind speed Length of time wind is blowing The distance the wind has traveled across open water.

4 Tides The regular changes in the water level of the ocean surface
Tides form from the gravitational attraction of the moon.
