Instructions- COLD TASK
Brainstorm words and ideas with the students using this PowerPoint. It can be edited to suit the level of your students (this also applies to the success criteria). You can do the Cold Task over 1-2 lessons. It is an independent task, but they can use environmental print and brainstormed words on the board to assist their writing.

REMEMBER Brainstorm all the ideas students have for the cold task on large post-it notes. You can leave these up in the room. You CAN leave brainstormed words/ideas up on the board to help students BUT NOT whole sentences for them to copy. This is an independent task used for moderating- if you provide any assistance, you must clearly write on the sample ASSISTANCE PROVIDED so we do not use it for moderating purposes. If students ask for help to spell a word, encourage them to have a go. If they don’t/can’t attempt it, provide the word and write *assisted with spelling* above. For pre-literate students, or students with a severe learning difficulty, you can scribe for them- but please indicate this on the work sample.

Brainstorm some ideas with the class about ‘who’ and ‘what’. Write them on a large post-it note. E.g. family went fishing, caught bait, cooked up the feed, collected fire wood, went crocodile spotting etc.

Brainstorm some ideas with the class about possible problems for their story (e.g. bush fire, car broken down, a crocodile appeared etc.). Write them on a large post-it note.

Teacher practises starting the story- modelling an example
Make sure you rub off any sentences you write on the board once students begin their cold task. Discuss how you included WHEN, WHERE, WHO AND WHAT in your sentence starter. One hot humid day, a family decided to go on a fishing trip to May River.

Now your turn! Students write their OWN cold task independently- can use ideas brainstormed as class or their own ideas.

Success criteria I have included WHEN, WHERE, WHO AND WHAT.
I have included a problem- something that went wrong. I have included a resolution- how to problem was fixed. I have used different sentence openers (not ‘and then, and then’). I have used capital letters for the beginning of sentences and names of people and places. I have used full stops at the end of sentences. I have used finger spaces between my words.
