Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-Shek) became leader of Goumindang (Kuomintang) – Chinese Nationalist Party After Sun Yat-Sen Chiang Started to fight the communists Mao Zedong (Mao Tse Tong) in 1934 fled to Northern China in a Long March 100,000 men/6000 miles journey 1949 Communists overthrew the nationalists

Mao won the support of the huge peasant population of China by promising them land Mao won the support of the women by rejecting inequalities of traditional Confucian society Mao’s army used hit-and-run guerilla tactics Many people opposed the nationalists because of their corruption Some people believed that nationalists allowed foreigners to dominate china
