Chinese Civil War In 1920’s China is overrun with warlords
Chiang Kai-Shek-Nationalist China seeks help from Communist Chinese to destroy the warlords. In 1927, threatened by communists, Chiang purged thousands of communists This started Chinese Civil war which raged for 22 years.

Why Communists Win China
Nationalist forces hurt by Japanese in WWII. Peasants supported communism High taxes and brutal rulers under national forces. Eventually Chiang Kai-shek and his forces abandoned China fled to Taiwan.

Mao Zedong Known as Chairman Mao. Leader of Communist China.
Proclaimed The People’s Republic of China under the rule of a one party system.

Great Leap Forward Attempt to increase agricultural and industrial output. Communes-combining farms to make one big farm. Backyard Industries-village factories to make steel and other goods. Results: Low quality industry goods, massive famine- 55 million Chinese starve to death.

Cultural Revolution Goal was to purge China of “bourgeois”-ness.
Inspire more communism. Red Guard-Roving bands beat up and killed anyone who looked not Communist. Schools and factories closed, destroyed cultural relics.
