5 Teen employment Currently, minimum wage in Virginia is $7.25.

6 work hours for teens Work Hours for Teens (ages 14 and 15):
Not before 7AM or after 7PM from Labor Day to June 1 Not during school hours 7AM – 9PM from June 1 to Labor Day Maximum hours when school is in session: 18 hours a week, but not more than 3 hours a day on school days, including Fridays 8 hours a day Saturdays and Sundays Maximum hours when school is not in session   40 hours a week 8 hours a day Ask if any of the students are 14 or 15 years old. If they are all older than 15, don’t spend as much time on this slide. Otherwise, please point out: Labor Day to June 1 – what is this? The school year Pay special attention to the max hours that can be worked during the school year and the rest break requirement. VA Law: Teens, 14 & 15 years old, are required to take a half-hour rest break or meal break after working five consecutive hours.

8 OSHA In Virginia, Teenagers 16 and 17 years of age have no restrictions on the number of hours worked. They must, however, comply with the compulsory school attendance law and curfew ordinances that may apply and these will influence times they can lawfully work. (Code of Virginia §§ and ) Curfew in Loudoun is midnight to 4AM

9 OSHA OSHA’s mission is to assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.

10 OSHA has identified hazards in 8 workplaces that commonly employ teens.
Find out if any of them work – discuss hazards particular to their workplaces

11 Employer responsibilities
Your employer must Provide a safe & healthy place to work Provide safety gear at no cost Provide training about workplace hazards –using teen friendly words Inform you of the on-the-job hazards & how to deal with them Spend time here

12 Employee responsibilities
You must Learn your rights Ask for safety training and follow all health/safety rules Report health/safety hazards Learn what to do if you get hurt at work Use safety equipment & protective clothing provided Stay alert, work safely Don’t take shortcuts Know what to do in an emergency RESPECT the people you work with, never bully or harass Spend time here

13 OSHA – no dangerous work
As a teen worker (under 18 years old): YOU MAY NOT Drive anything with a motor on public streets Work with a forklift or other powered machinery Work with powered hoists Work with power tools or machinery Work in wrecking, demolition, excavation, or roofing Work where you could be exposed to radiation Work where explosives are produced or stored Spend time here Point out – golf cart on the course’s property may be OK, but not running to Giant for milk…

14 OSHA– dangerous jobs As a teen, you may NOT:
bake or cook (with some exceptions); door-to-door sales; sign waving (unless directly in front of workplace); lifeguard on elevated slides or at lakes, rivers, ocean, quarries, or piers (15 yr olds may lifeguard at pools & waterparks if trained); use power-driven machinery; work on a ladder or scaffold; work in warehouses; any job in construction, manufacturing, mining, and most businesses that process items (dry cleaners, for example); load or unload trucks, railroad cars, or conveyors. More dangerous jobs: Commercial bakeries prohibited, but not fast food Door-to-door sales as a job (not selling Girl Scout cookies)
