Political Thought 3 main types of political philosophies:
Conservative: wealthy & nobility – keep traditional monarchies Liberal: middle-class business leaders & merchants – power to parliament, but only educated and landowners would vote Radical: want drastic change & democracy to everyone

Nationalism Nationalism: greatest loyalty should be to nation of people who share culture, traditions, & history Nation-state: nation with an independent government Greeks become 1st to win self-rule – break away from Ottomans Belgians gain independence from Dutch Italy tries to unite states Poland revolts against Russia

France & Louis-Napoleon
Charles X tries to re-establish absolute monarchy in France & fails Louis-Philippe becomes king – offers reforms Riots force Louis-Philippe to give up throne Louis-Napoleon (Napoleon’s nephew) elected president Louis-Napoleon = excellent leader; names himself emperor Citizens accept this because he is great leader and they want stability
