Vocabulary Imperialism: actions used by one nation to exercise political or economic power over smaller weaker nations Militarism: a buildup of military strength within a country Nationalism: loyalty to a nation and promotion of its interests above all others Alliances: a close association of nations or other groups, formed to advance common interests or causes

Militarism How does militarism play a part?
As countries began building up their military, other countries began to feel threaten building the tension of war Main country to build up their military was Germany Had the largest army and second largest navy to Great Britain Germany building its military, alarmed France and Great Britain G.B. and France began to build up their military France was especially nervous France was defeated by Germany during the Franco-Prussian War just a few years earlier

Alliances How do alliances play a part?
When one country was being threatened/attacked, countries who were ‘friends’ or shared common interests would come to their aid creating a chain effect French, Brits, and other Germans formed an alliance against Germany Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Ottoman Empire formed an alliance

Imperialism How does Imperialism play a part?
Countries who felt their territories/or trade markets were being threatened against enemies would cause war tension. Also, countries who wanted other countries’ land would create more tension Austria-Hungary and Russia were in conflict over the Balkan Peninsula Russia wanted to protect the Balkans since they shared a similar culture Austria-Hungary wanted to take over the Balkans The people living in the Balkans wanted to remain independent

Nationalism How does Nationalism play a part?
Some territories/colonies wanted independence and began to go against those who they were colonized by Countries who felt they were being ‘threatened’ were quick to fit to protect their nation’s integrity Think the Balkans against Austria-Hungary Colonies were not scared to go to war This became costly for other countries to try to control them
