1 KM3NeT Detector optimisation with FAST-CAL*
*Fast Approximate Simulation of Tracks - Calculation of Aeff for Lines Christopher Naumann, CEA Saclay

2  response of detector to light
FAST-CAL revisited Description of storey properties: positioning and number of OMs properties of PMTs (size, angular acceptance) → “mean photocathode surface”  response of detector to light 10" 3" “ANT” “MULTI” “NEMO4” 3” 10” 8”-10” upgoing downgoing ANT MULTI NEMO-4 NEMO-6 as function of qg 23/02/09 - Christopher Lindsay Naumann - Detector optimisations with FastCal

3 → use for simplified physics simulation!
FAST-CAL revisited (2) sensitivity to muon: each storey hit from different direction sum over all possible light emission directions m fch=42° ANT MULTI NEMO-4 NEMO-6 upgoing downgoing efficiency for different storey types for up- and downgoing muons “directionality” of detector …now we need a physics model to create a simulation tool… → use for simplified physics simulation! 23/02/09 - Christopher Lindsay Naumann - Detector optimisations with FastCal

4 FAST-CAL (pseudo Monte-Carlo)
storey as solid “pixel” + detector as pixel array + muon as straight line + trigger condition (e.g. 5L1) 1TeV 100TeV  fast approximate simulation! generate many “tracks” count “triggers”  Aeff,m  Aeff,n Aeff [m2] points: ANT MC curve: FAST-CAL logE [GeV] ex: CDR reference, thesis S.Kuch compare with “official” MC good agreement!  can use for fast layout studies! 23/02/09 - Christopher Lindsay Naumann - Detector optimisations with FastCal

5 Application: Scan the parameter space
Example: “cuboid” geometry storeys type “ANTARES” variable distance between lines 1 TeV 100 TeV 200m 50m log10Eμ [TeV] Aeffμ [km2] -1 1 2 3 5 0.5 0.1 0.05 0.01 20×25m utilise FastCal sur une multitude des dessins pour énergies hautes: distance   volume   Aeff  pour énergies basses: distance   densité   Aeff  énergie « critique » ~ TeV 50m, 85m, 100m, 150m, 200m 23/02/09 - Christopher Lindsay Naumann - Detector optimisations with FastCal

6 Conclusion and outlook
FAST/CAL provides useful tool for parameter scan fast evaluation of layouts + storey types, site parameters,… String detector study at Saclay (Christopher + Giulia): hexagonal layouts FAST/CAL: scan ANT-MC: details optimise l cut  Hopefully good results for next meeting! logE [GeV] Aeff,n [m2] angular error l > -7 l > -6 l > -5 l > -4 20 × 30m 23/02/09 - Christopher Lindsay Naumann - Detector optimisations with FastCal

7 Thank you! 23/02/09 - Christopher Lindsay Naumann - Detector optimisations with FastCal
