The middle East is comprised of 23 countries in the Northeast hemisphere.

Why do we study the Middle East?
The middle east is an small area of the world with major influences on the rest of the world dating back for thousands of years even to the present time.

Group A: With an arid climate what impacts do you think that has on its culture? Why? Group B: What kind of natural resources do you think the Middle East has? Why? Group C: What types of natural resources are probably hard to locate in the middle east? Why?

Used for many reasons fuel, heat, production of plastic Livestock Cows, Chickens, Alpacas, Llamas, Sheep etc. Has many minerals as natural resources Sulfur (use to make medicines, matches and many other items) Asphalt (use to make streets) Phosphorus (used for fertilizer)

Irrigation Irrigation: To supply (dry land) with water by means of ditches, pipes, or streams; water artificially With the scarcity of water many middle east countries rely on irrigation to grow crops.

Work Time Read the source document and complete the questions assigned to your group. Group A Group B Group C What is the driest area in the Middle East? Where does the Jordan river flow? How do commercial farms get water to their crops? Distinguish: What are the differences between the Dardanelles and Bosporus. Cite Evidence: Why is the Middle East a major producer of fertilizers? Draw Conclusions: If water is scarce what do you think these countries do with the fertilizer they create? Why do you think they named the lowest point on any continent “The Dead Sea”? How do you think the two very different climates of Turkey effect its culture? Explain why irrigation is an important part of the middle eastern society.
