1 Bonding Part I Chemistry IB

2 Review Vocabulary Ion-atom with a charge
Cation-Positive ion, lost electrons Anion-Negative ion, gained electrons Polyatomic ion -more than one element attached to the charge. Oxidation number -the charge that represents the number of electrons lost or gained

3 Chemical Bonds Definition-Force that holds 2 atoms together
Valence Electrons and electronegativity determine the type of bonding. Ionic bonding- Occurs when electrons are completely transferred from one atom to another. Held together by electrostatic force. This is the strongest type of bond

4 Sodium Meets Chlorine More details and animations are here-

5 Bonding Basics Make sure you understand valence electrons and electron configurations Draw Dot structures of valence electrons Know your oxidation numbers Make sure that positive and negative charges add up to zero!

6 Practice 1 sodium and fluorine

7 Practice 2 sodium and oxygen

8 Properties of Ionic Bonds
Most ionic compounds are solid at room temperature Dissolve in water Conduct electricity when in the molten state or dissolved in water Very high melting points. (strongest bond) Examples: Acids, bases and salts Note the crystal structure above!
