Set the Ground Rules

This is over 50,000 women who are diagnosed every year in the UK.
1 in 8 women will be affected by breast cancer at some point in their life in the UK. Girls - imagine you and a group of 7 friends. That means that 1 of you could get BC at some point in your life. This is over 50,000 women who are diagnosed every year in the UK. 400 men a year are also diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK, which may be a surprise to you. Put your hand up if you didn’t know that men could get breast cancer?

Did anyone hear about Angelina Jolie’s story around breast cancer in the news a few years ago?
She didn’t have breast cancer, but found out she carried the mutated BRCA gene – this is a mutation in your cells and means your risk of developing breast cancer is between 50-90% higher than someone that doesn’t carry the gene. Angelina Jolie opted to have a preventative double mastectomy, which means she had surgery to remove both of her boobs (all of the breast tissue) to hugely reduce her risk of getting breast cancer in the future. Less than 10% of breast cancers are actually caused by this genetic link, but if you do know that you have a family history or are concerned, you can have a chat with your doctor who can give you more information and advice on this.

You might be surprised to know that all of these regular headline grabbers don’t have enough evidence to suggest they can cause breast cancer. If you are ever concerned about any health headlines you see, head to the NHS Choices website where they have a page dedicated to explaining them. Breast Implants - If you’re thinking of getting any form of cosmetic surgery, it’s always best to have a chat with your GP first as there are other health implications involved, but there is no evidence to suggest that breast implants cause breast cancer. Mobile Phones - They are still a relatively new technology and therefore research is still being developed, however there is no current evidence to suggest they cause breast cancer. We would just say to be on the safe side, and for your own comfort, keep it in your bag or pocket, not tucked into your bra. Girls - Wrong Size Bra or not wearing a sports bra - To provide more comfort and support, we recommend getting correctly fitting bras. But again, there isn’t sufficient evidence to support this headline. Keep wearing deodorants! For the sake of those around you, we very much advice keeping yourself fresh under there! And finally, we often read that apparently only older women can get breast cancer. Although your risk of getting breast cancer increases as you get older, young people can still get breast cancer so it’s good to be informed at a younger age to develop healthy habits.
