5 James 5:17... 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months.

7 Priscilla

8 Acts 18:2, 18, 26;Romans 16:3; 1 Corinthians 16:19; 2 Timothy 4:19
The Woman Who Was Foremost in Service Acts 18:2, 18, 26;Romans 16:3; 1 Corinthians 16:19; 2 Timothy 4:19 Who was Priscilla in the Bible? Name Meaning—Priscilla is the diminutive of Prisca, feminine of Prisca meaning “worthy, or venerable," as belonging to the good old time. This name is also found as a family name in the earliest Roman records, and appears in the form “Prisca" in Paul’s Second Epistle to Timothy (2 Timothy 4:19). From the prominence given in Roman inscriptions and legends to the name Prisca it is concluded that she belonged to a distinguished Roman family.

9 Their two hearts beat as one.
Family Connections—Of Priscilla’s background and parentage Scripture is silent. Doubtless, like her husband, she was born in Pontus. Both were Jews of Asia-Minor, and as such were expelled by Claudius from Rome, and in Corinth, Priscilla and Aquila became the honored and much-loved friends of Paul. As Priscilla is always paired with her husband, Aquila, it is difficult to separate her and place her on a pedestal of her own. Their two hearts beat as one. They labored together in the service of the church. They walked as one for they had mutually agreed to put Christ first. They are never mentioned apart. Let us now look at the many fascinating facets of the union existing between these two old-time saints.

10 2Ti 4:19 Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.
In his last few words, Paul instructed Timothy to greet two very special people 2Ti 4:19  Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. Their business was tent making, a craft which they shared with Paul for a time Act 18:1  After these things Paul departed from Athens and went to Corinth. 2  And he found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla (because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to depart from Rome); and he came to them. 3  So, because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and worked; for by occupation they were tentmakers.

11 Such would keep them busy and require much of their time
Tent making was a needful business, much like home-building today Probably, Aquila and Priscilla had several places of business They were from Rome and Paul found them in Corinth, so these two are certainly possible. They were also seen in Ephesus (Acts 18:24-26), where they likely would have set up business as well Such would keep them busy and require much of their time

12 Regarding Aquila and Priscilla, let us make two assumptions:
The work of the church is dependent upon Christians like Aquila and Priscilla- normal, everyday working people The time they had to devote to their business often challenged the time they needed to devote to the work of the local church

13 Regarding Aquila and Priscilla, let us make two assumptions:
Since Aquila and Priscilla are described as fellow “helpers in Christ” (Rom. 16:3) let’s take a closer look at their lives in order to enrich ours In doing so, let’s also see if our assumptions are not correct

14 They Took Time To Learn and Obey The Truth

15 They accepted the truth, overcoming the prejudice of their day
Both were Jews (Acts 18); and most Jews rejected teachings of Jesus Rom 10:1  Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2  For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3  For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.

16 They accepted the truth, overcoming the prejudice of their day
Both were Jews (Acts 18); and most Jews rejected teachings of Jesus 1 Peter 2:7  Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, "THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED HAS BECOME THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE,"

17 They accepted the truth, overcoming the prejudice of their day
Both were Jews (Acts 18); and most Jews rejected teachings of Jesus 1Co 1:23-25  but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24  but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25  Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

18 Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: Romans 16:3
They accepted the truth, overcoming the prejudice of their day Both were Jews (Acts 18); and most Jews rejected teachings of Jesus They were now fellow-workers in Christ Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: Romans 16:3

19 They Took Time To Work!

20 …for by their occupation they were tentmakers. Acts 18:3b
It is, of course, godly and right to work And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. Genesis 2:15

21 …for by their occupation they were tentmakers. Acts 18:3b
It is, of course, godly and right to work 2Th 3:10  For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.

22 …for by their occupation they were tentmakers. Acts 18:3b
It is, of course, godly and right to work Since they worked with Paul, we know they were diligent laborers 1Th 2:9  For you remember, brethren, our labor and toil; for laboring night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God.

23 …for by their occupation they were tentmakers. Acts 18:3b
It is, of course, godly and right to work Since they worked with Paul, we know they were diligent laborers 2Th 3:8  nor did we eat anyone's bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you,

24 …for by their occupation they were tentmakers. Acts 18:3b
It is, of course, godly and right to work Since they worked with Paul, we know they were diligent laborers Act 20:34  Yes, you yourselves know that these hands have provided for my necessities, and for those who were with me.

25 …for by their occupation they were tentmakers. Acts 18:3b
It is, of course, godly and right to work Since they worked with Paul, we know they were diligent laborers They doubtless believed in the principle of diligent work Col 3:23  And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,

26 …for by their occupation they were tentmakers. Acts 18:3b
It is, of course, godly and right to work Since they worked with Paul, we know they were diligent laborers They doubtless believed in the principle of diligent work Without modern conveniences they conducted their business, but still had time for the Lord Aquila and Priscilla teach us that work is honorable But, they also teach us that it will not save our souls, nor will it serve as an excuse for not serving God

27 They Took Time To Be A Family!

28 Do not read about Aquila without reading about Priscilla
Their names always appear together Husbands and wives must recognize their priorities in and to the family Eph 5:22-25  Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23  For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body 24  Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything 25  Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her

29 Do not read about Aquila without reading about Priscilla
Their names always appear together Husbands and wives must recognize their priorities in and to the family Tit 2:4  that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,

30 Do not read about Aquila without reading about Priscilla
Their names always appear together Husbands and wives must recognize their priorities in and to the family In order to prosper, the church must have strong Christian families

31 To Teach Others About Christ!
They Took Time To Teach Others About Christ!

32 Act 18:24  Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25  This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26  So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

33 Apollos was “mighty in the Scriptures” and also “eloquent”
He knew much about the Bible (OT) and was well able to teach it But, he knew God’s system only up to the baptism of John Aquila and Priscilla had to be prepared to teach, and willing to do so 1Pe 3:15  But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear

34 Apollos was “mighty in the Scriptures” and also “eloquent”
He knew much about the Bible (OT) and was well able to teach it But, he knew God’s system only up to the baptism of John Aquila and Priscilla had to be prepared to teach, and willing to do so 2Ti 2:2  And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

35 They Took Time To Build Up The church!

36 Not only in teaching, but in other ways also They were hospitable
Act 18:3  So, because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and worked; for by occupation they were tentmakers.

37 Not only in teaching, but in other ways also They were hospitable
The church often met for worship in their house Rom 16:3-5  Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, 4  who risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles. 5  Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia to Christ.

38 Not only in teaching, but in other ways also They were hospitable
The church often met for worship in their house 1Co 16:19  The churches of Asia greet you. Aquila and Priscilla greet you heartily in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.

39 Not only in teaching, but in other ways also They were hospitable
The church often met for worship in their house They were gentle and humble in their demeanor The occasion of teaching Apollos could have gone badly Act 18:26  So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

40 Not only in teaching, but in other ways also They were hospitable
The church often met for worship in their house They were gentle and humble in their demeanor The occasion of teaching Apollos could have gone badly They were sacrificial in their service and devotion Rom 16:3  Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, 4  who risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.

41 What about brethren in Christ?
Not only in teaching, but in other ways also They were hospitable The church often met for worship in their house They were gentle and humble in their demeanor The occasion of teaching Apollos could have gone badly They were sacrificial in their service and devotion Would you and I do this? Would you do such for our spouses, our children or other family members What about brethren in Christ?

42 Described as fellow workers
They were cooperative Described as fellow workers Did not leave a trail of trouble behind them in congregations where they had served Like them, we are to be hospitable, gentle, sacrificial and cooperative Heb 13:1  Let brotherly love continue. 2  Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels

43 Described as fellow workers
They were cooperative Described as fellow workers Did not leave a trail of trouble behind them in congregations where they had served Like them, we are to be hospitable, gentle, sacrificial and cooperative Col 3:12  Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13  bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14  But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

44 They were cooperative Described as fellow workers Did not leave a trail of trouble behind them in congregations where they had served Like them, we are to be hospitable, gentle, sacrificial and cooperative Joh 15:13  Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.

45 Described as fellow workers
They were cooperative Described as fellow workers Did not leave a trail of trouble behind them in congregations where they had served Like them, we are to be hospitable, gentle, sacrificial and cooperative 1Co 13:4  Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5  does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6  does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7  bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

46 They Took Time To Learn and Obey The Truth They Took Time To Work!
They Took Time to Be a Family They Took Time to Teach Others About Christ They Took Time to Build Up the Church

47 Aquila & Priscilla challenge us to be so committed
What about our two assumptions? The work of the church is dependent upon Christians like Aquila & Priscilla- normal, everyday working people The time they had to devote to their business often challenged the time they needed to devote to the work of the local church We do know they worked at it and worked it out They were successful business people and great workers in the kingdom Their work was not used as an excuse nor as a crutch to keep them from being engaged in the work of God Aquila & Priscilla challenge us to be so committed
