In some cases, a hero is not truly evident at the beginning of the story. For example, at the beginning of the play Giles Corey is shushed by Rebecca Nurse and made fun of by Mr. Putnam for being in court so many times. Even Proctor, his good friend seems to think that he is a little crazy, but they still farm together. Then, after the trials start, it is evident that Corey actually has quite a bit of common sense and heroic principles. These are never more apparent than in Act III when Danforth jails him for refusing to provide the name of a farmer who claimed that Putnam was killing his neighbors for their land. Finally, In Act IV, Elizabeth Proctor tells John, her husband, that Giles is dead because he simply refused to ever give up the name of that farmer. He knew that telling this man's name to the court would have promised certain death for both him and the man, so he spared one of them. As he is being tortured to death, he tells his captors, "more weight" (65). This simple statement shows that Giles Corey is a true hero because he would rather lose his own life than give up his integrity or give up the life of someone else. Also, the fact that he is a true figure in Salem history shows that his story has withstood the test of time, which is another example of being a hero.
