Web-Based Information Science Education (WISE) Initiative
In 2004, the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at UIUC in partnership with Syracuse University received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to develop an online education consortium emphasizing quality metrics, faculty development, and course share. Currently, 15 institutions in 5 countries (US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia) are formal consortium members.

WISE Coursesharing Offer spaces in online courses to students from other schools Once approved to enroll, the student registers at his/her home school but takes the course offered by another university Student must adapt to differences in technology and pedagogy

WISE+: Partnerships with Professional Associations
Example: Course in theological librarianship American Theological Library Association developed course recruited instructor advertised course GSLIS hired instructor registered students supported online delivery of course

Benefits of WISE/WISE+
WISE: students gain access to specialized courses from other universities, broaden their experience with online learning WISE+: model for professional schools to partner with professional associations for mutual benefit—support education for special areas within the profession
