8. The Canaanite woman!

9. What do we know about this woman
What do we know about this woman? Is there something we can learn from her? Why is this woman in the pages of the Bible?

10. Jesus is out of the country for the first time.
He is in the area of Tyre and Sidon!
His encounter with a Cananite woman is the basis for my bible class this morning.
What is Jesus doing out of the city limits of His country?

11. Matthew 15:21
Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon
Mark 7:24 From there He arose and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And He entered a house and wanted no one to know it, but He could not be hidden.

Tyre:
A Gentile city located in Phoenicia (modern Lebanon), which borders Galilee to the northwest .
A journey of about 30 miles from Capernaum has brought Jesus “to the vicinity of Tyre.”

Since the feeding of the 5,000 (6:30 – 44) Jesus and his disciples had been, for the most part, skirting the region of Galilee.

[21] Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. [22] And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed." [23] But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, "Send her away, for she cries out after us." [24] But He answered and said, "I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." [25] Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, help me!" [26] But He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs." [27] And she said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table." [28] Then Jesus answered and said to her, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

Brothers and sisters, she's not asking anything for herself, she's a mother, a caring mother that is suffering and feeling the pain and agony of her daughter!

16. Canaanite.
A term found many times in the OT but only here in the NT.
In NT times there was no country known as Canaan.
Some think this was the Semitic manner of referring to the people of Phoenicia at this time.
Mark says the woman was “a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia” (7:26).

Our hesitations, delays and anxieties toward obeying the Lord, cf. Acts 16:33; 24:25 (lack of faith, doubt…death!).    2.  She had faith to ask for help from Jesus, 15:22.      a.   Her plea was for her daughter and herself, since her daughter’s pain was her pain.      b.   Seek mercy from the Lord for others as well as ourselves.      c.   Admitted that she needed help – from an enemy!! (Jew)      d.   Cf. Sinner: Must admit he needs help from God.      e.   Must search for God – will find Him! Acts 17:27-28      f.    Ask, seek and find, Matt 7:7-12; Heb 4:14-16.    3.  She had faith to listen to Jesus, 15:23-26.      a.   Heart to hear, Matt 13:9. Too often we want to tell Jesus how it has to be! (Illus. Salvation; worship; the church, moral issues…)      b.   Open heart to the truth of the gospel, Matt 13:19.    4.  She had faith to persist and not leave Jesus, 15:23-25.      a.   Even when Jesus at first said nothing.      b.   Even when His disciples urged Jesus to send her away.      c.   She still came and worshiped Him, 15:25 (to whom shall we go? Jno 6:68).      d.   She showed great humility, 15:26-27; cf. Lk 15:17-19. II.    THE DISCIPLES.  A.  They Seemed Anxious to Protect their Distinction and Separation.    1.  She was a woman, unclean, a Gentile and a sinner.    2.  They were sensitive of contact with the “unclean” (Acts 10:14, 28).    3.  In His reaction to the woman, Jesus practices (illustrates) the elimination of ceremonial defilements discussed re. food (15:17-20) and applies it to people (Acts 10:28).    4.  We are indeed to be separate from sin and error, 2 Cor 6:17-18; Eph 5:11.    5.  At the same time we are to keep right attitudes toward the lost, the erring, the weak and the suffering, Gal 6:1-2; 1 Ths 5:14-15.  B.  They were Dismissive of the Gentile Woman, 15:23.    1.  Perhaps to protect their “quiet time”, cf. Mk 7:24-25.    2.  Perhaps because they knew she was not “one of them” (Lk 9:56).    3.  We cannot be dismissive of people because they do not fall into our mold of respectability. (Homeless? Alcoholic? Divorced?) Jas 2:1-4      a.  Illus. Transgendered person ( ) – Needs the gospel!      b.  These are the ones Jesus came to save! (Lk 19:10)      c.  We must not dismiss honest interest in Christ and His gospel. III. JESUS. (Matt 11:28-30)  A.  Hears and Responds to Cries for Mercy, Heb 2:16-17; 4:14-16.  B.  Delay is not Denial, but an Opportunity to Show our Faith, 15:23; Jas 1:2-3 (Rev 6:9-11).  C.  Explained His Purpose, 15:24, 26.    1.  The Scriptures explain the plan of God and lead our way to Him.    2.  God has taken time to teach us His purposes, Eph 3:8-13.  D.  Jesus Blessed the Woman for Her “Great” Faith, 15:28; Mk 7:30.    1.  Healed her daughter “that very hour”.    2.  Will heal sinners immediately and completely, Acts 16:33; 22:16. Conclusion1.  The Savior and His salvation are accessible to all who will come to Him in faith for mercy, Lk 19:10.2.  Let us be sure that we hinder none who would come to Him.

Did Jesus came only to the house of Israel?
Was not Jesus the Savior of all men?
Why then, did He answer the woman like that?

Jesus is waiting for you and I to recognized that we need Him.
Jesus is waiting for you and I to humble ourselves in front of Him, James 4:10
The woman is almost ready to open the window of blessing that Jesus will shower upon her!
How can I open that door?

30. JESUS What is Jesus saying? Is Jesus calling this needy woman a “DOG”?
[26] But He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs."

What is Jesus saying?
Is Jesus calling this needy woman a “DOG”?
YES!
Let me explain something first!
The bread… What is the bread?
The bread here refers to the benefits that the Messiah was to bring to them, which included salvation for the body, soul, and spirit. Salvation from sin, sickness, demons, and satanic powers. Isaiah 61
Let’s be fair, these are family rights, Divine rights, legal rights, promised rights.

31. That bread is not for you, it is ONLY for the children!
[26] But He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs."

Why is Jesus treating this woman totally different from the way he treated the Samaritan woman?
First- Phoenician.
Second- Samaria.
Still, both women are Gentile, but to the first- Dogs.
To the second one: Give me a Drink.
What's going on, was Jesus racist as many are saying when it comes to Matthew 15:21-29?
That bread is not for you, it is ONLY for the children!

32. So, what do they mean then?
[26] But He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs."
JESUS
(DOGS) Greek: kunarion: little dog, puppy.
Jesus never spoke harshly or rejected anyone who came to him with a desperate need. If a person was truly sincere and had the potential of trusting Him as Lord, He always accepted that person.
So whatever happened, we know the words were NOT meant to be harsh or rejecting.
So, what do they mean then?

33. JESUS Please remember:
[26] But He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs."

Jesus is in another region, and I do believe that Jesus was helping the woman move forward in her faith, trust and in clear understanding of just who He Is.
He also had to teach that Salvation is of the Jews and that He is that salvation, the Master of all lives.
Please remember:
Jesus’ time is very limited and He must explain to people the purpose of His coming!

34. JESUS Why did she understand and NOT MANY TODAY?
[27] And she said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."

Why did she understand and NOT MANY TODAY?
Why didn’t she say, you're a racist I'm leaving.
Why didn't she get touched like many today when they hear that the Gospel of Jesus demands changes from all men.
Humbleness!
People humbleness is what Jesus is expecting from all of us.
‘HUMBLE YOUR SELF IN THE SIGHT OF THE LORD’

35. And crumbs she says that fall from the masters’ table!!!!
[27] And she said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."

She knew that when Jesus use the word DOG, Greek kunarion, it was a diminutive used as a term of endearment. It was typically referred to the house dog that slept in the masters’ lap.
Yes, Lord, but even WE, The Little dogs deserve some of that bread!
Maybe not from the table , but we are happy to eat the CRUMBS.
And crumbs she says that fall from the masters’ table!!!!
Everyone, THIS IS FAITH!

36. “Let it be to you as you desire.”
[28] Then Jesus answered and said to her, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

Jesus says: YOU WIN!
THE MASTER SAYS: Woman, you are GREAT. You really Trust in Me.
You really believe that I can do what you're asking for.
So, because of that:
“Let it be to you as you desire.”
