Hospital pharmacy Is a department in which the drugs are procured, stored , compounded, checked for quality , dispensed, packed and distributed to the in-patient and out patients by legally qualified pharmacists.

Typical work of hospital pharmacists
They advise on the selection of medicines, the dose & route of administration for individual patients. They provide information about potential side effects & ensure that new medicines are compatible with any existing medication. They monitor the effects of treatment to ensure that it is safe & effective.

4. They are responsible for the purchase (procurement), dispensing, & supply of all medicines used in the hospital, although many of these activities are undertaken by pharmacist assistants.

5. They provide advice to other healthcare professionals on the effects of medicine or combination of medicines may produce. 6. They work with patients to select the appropriate therapy, depending on factors such as existing medication, medical history, life style, the patient’s beliefs and wishes & their ability to understand & adhere to a treatment plan.

7. Manufacturing medicines when ready-made preparations are not available.
8. Specialized roles in other areas such as quality assurance, clinical trials and education.
