Unifying Characteristics
Eukaryotic – cell with nucleus Can be unicellular, multi-cellular, colonial Can be heterotrophic, autotrophic, or saprotrophic Can be motile or stationary Used as a bio-indicator or healthy environments
6
Animal-like Protista Plant-like Protista Fungi-like Protista Motile
Heterotrophic Use cilia, flagella, or pseudopodia to move Known as protozoa Stationary Have chlorophyll as pigment for photosynthesis Have chloroplasts Autotrophic Micro or macroalgae Water molds or slime molds Unicellular molds Release enzymes out to environment to digest food (absorb nutrients)
7
Animal-like Protista HETEROTROPHIC
Use cilia, flagella, or pseudopodia to move Engulf (eat) food Micro-organisms Can be parasitic
8
Protista Parasite Trypanisomastigote (animal-like protista)
African Sleeping Sickness – from the Tsete Fly
9
Malaria Parasitic Protista
10
Malaria
11
Micro Plant-like Protista AUTOTROPHIC PHOTOSYNTHESIZE
Photosynthetic (autotrophic) Stationary In ponds and lakes Delicate balance needed as can destroy water ecosystems if eutrophication occurs (over population, which damages aquatic life)
12
Macro Plant-like Protista AUTOTROPHIC PHOTOSYNTHESIZE
Macro-algae has recently been moved from Kingdom Plantae to Kingdom Protista Use a range of pigments for photosynthesis (red, green, brown) Make most of the atmosphere’s oxygen
13
Macro Plant-like Protista AUTOTROPHIC PHOTOSYNTHESIZE
Important food source for humans and create the “forests” of the oceans for marine life
14
Fungi-like Protista Decomposers
Water-molds and slime molds Exo-enzymes for external digestion Although unicellular, cells can swarm to look like a larger multicellular organism Can create spores to survive harsh conditions
15
Taxonomy (the Phyla)

Classified Ad Create a Facebook Buy and Sell ad for your Protista
Create a whiteboard poster of your ad Be sure to include important characteristics that I buyer would want to know Type of cell Motion? What does it eat? What does it answer to? Issues in environment? Organisms it impacts? Size? Colour? Cost of maintaining population? Uses?
17
Classified Ad You and a partner are to choose 1 of the below protista: (write your name by it). Research, create your ad. We will share tomorrow. Foraminfera Paramecium Ameoba Euglena Dinoflagellates Diatoms Kelp Turkish washcloth Sea lettuce Water mold Slime mold Trypanosomes Sporozoans Plasmodium
