They were first taken during the 1850s.

2 1. b) How were the cameras carried high above the ground to take these early aerial photographs?
In the 1850s, cameras were carried by kites. Later in the century, cameras were carried by hot air balloons. During the 20th century, airplanes and satellites were starting to be used to take aerial photographs.

3 2. What types of things are aerial photographs now used to study?
They are used to study: farm size, crop plantings, soil erosion, the flow of traffic in cities, land uses, drainage patterns, and vegetation patterns. They are also useful for: archaeological studies, meteorological observations, crime detection, and spying.
