1 The Science of Chemistry Chapter 1
1.1 – What is Chemistry?

2 What do you think chemistry is?
What is Chemistry? What do you think chemistry is? Chemical – any substance with a definite composition Some natural and some artificial Chemistry is defined

3 Chemicals Participate In…
Chemical Reaction – the process by which 1 or more substances change to produce 1 or more different substances Top 8 produced chemicals

4 Chemicals exist in a physical state
What are the 3 physical states of matter? States of Matter – the physical forms of matter which are solid, liquid, gas, and plasma What are the differences between them?

5 Changes of Matter Physical Change – the identity of the substance does not change ~ it is still the same compound ~ tearing paper ~ change of state ~ sugar mixing with tea

6 Changes of Matter Chemical Change – identity of substance changes and a new substance is formed Fe + O2  FeO Iron Rusting A leaf decaying

7 Reactions Reactant – a substance or molecule that participates in a chemical reaction Product – a substance that is formed during a chemical reaction  is a yield sign and it indicates the direction of a rxn

8 Evidence of a Chemical Change
Evolution of gas Formation of precipitate Evolution or absorption of Energy Color change in reaction system

9 Questions Describe the motion of particles in the 3 common states of matter. Explain why gasses and liquids do not have permanent shapes.

10 Assignment Copy the vocabulary words and their definitions for chapter 1 in your notebook.
