What is the FDA? FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring that foods (except for meat from livestock, poultry and some egg products which are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture are safe, wholesome, sanitary and properly labeled; ensuring that human and veterinary drugs, and vaccines and other biological products and medical devices intended for human use are safe and effective
5
Ingredients • FDA regulates the safety of substances added to food. We also regulate how most food is processed, packaged, and labeled. • The ingredient list on a food label is the listing of each ingredient in descending order of predominance • The ingredient list is placed on the same label panel as the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or distributor
6
Nutrition Facts • Candy is not the healthiest, and certainly not high in nutrition, but companies still need to include the nutritional values on packaging.
7
Barcodes • a machine-readable code in the form of numbers and a pattern of parallel lines of varying widths, printed on and identifying a product. Also called “Universal Product Code”. • Besides sales and inventory tracking, barcodes are very useful in logistics and supply chain management. When a manufacturer packs a box for shipment, a Unique Identifying Number (UID) can be assigned to the box. A database can link the UID to relevant information about the box; such as order number, items packed, quantity packed, destination, etc.
