1 Topic 8 – People in Space

2 Sputnik 1 and Vostok 1 The soviet union was the first to successfully orbit a satellite around Earth (Sputnik 1) They were also the first to put a person into space – Vostok 1 orbited Earth in 108 minutes.

3 Freedom 7 Project Mercury’s goal was to place an AMERICAN into space.
Alan Shepard flew in Freedom 7 into space but flew a suborbital flight A suborbital flight means the spacecraft was boosted above the atmosphere but then fell back down to Earth without going into orbit. In 1962 the first American made the trip around Earth (John Glenn)

4 The Apollo Program Designed to send a three person team to the moon
It would land two of the people on the moon and then bring everyone back safely. It had an orbiter and a lander

5 The moon Landing In the summer of 1969, Apollo 11 took Neil Armstrong and his team to the moon “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.

6 Meeting in Space The Russians and Americans were always competing in the “space race.” They decided to use the technology from Apollo and Soyuz and join forces This became the first international mission in 1975

7 The space Shuttle At the end of the 1970’s, the USA decided to make a reusable space craft called the space shuttle. Up until this point, a space craft could only be used once. These are now used to launch satellites, photograph Earth and carry repair crews for orbiting satellites.

8 Columbia The first space shuttle was called Columbia in 1981
The Canada built space arm (the Canadarm) was tested on this flight

9 Canadian Astronauts In 1983 the Canadian space agency hired Canada’s first team of six. (they did all their training with the Americans at NASA) Marc Garneau became the first Canadian in space on a space shuttle called Challenger in 1984. The first Canadian woman, Roberta Bondar, in space went up on Discovery in 1992

10 The International Space Station
Space shuttles are being used to help build the ISS 16 nations have come together to build this amazing structure The main partners are NASA (USA), CSA (Canada), ESA (European Space Agency), NASDA (Japan) and RSA (Russia)

11 Canadarm Canada developed space robotics for the ISS which is KEY for the stations assembly and maintenance. Canadarm2 was attached to the ISS in 2001 and on the end of the arm is a Canada Hand

12 Benefits from the ISS 1. Provides a place for astronauts to do long-term research There is weightlessness on the ISS because essentially the ISS is free falling. You are constantly falling around the Earth 2. Medical advances We can see how certain drugs and medicines behave in micro-gravity and this can help advance the process

13 5. Create new jobs on Earth and in Space
3. Industrial benefits Can lead to stronger, lighter metals and more powerful computer chips 4. Study the effects of long-term exposure to the external space environment Help improve space craft design 5. Create new jobs on Earth and in Space

14 Advantages to Space Exploration

15 Disadvantages to Space Exploration
