Geography is a broad discipline… By dividing it into smaller “chunks” geographers can… organize and analyze More informed manner this way

7 Movement How are people and places connected?”

8 MOVEMENT - Examples How are people, goods, ideas moved from place to place? Human Movement Trucks, Trains, Planes Information Movement Phones, computer ( ), mail Idea Movement How do fads move from place to place? TV, Radio, Magazines

9 “How are places alike and different?”
Region “How are places alike and different?” An area on the earth’s surface that is defined by certain unifying characteristics. Unifying characteristics may be physical or cultural. Also study how a region changes over times. Geographers divide the world into manageable units for study...

10 Three Types of Regions Formal regions Functional regions
Defined by governing agencies or by physical regions. Cannot be changed EXAMPLE: Functional regions When all places within share a service. If the service/function ends, the region no longer exists. Perceptual regions Defined by people’s preconceived images- and may often be inaccurate!

26 LOCATION -Where are we? Absolute Location Relative Location
A latitude and longitude (global location) or a street address (local location). Paris France is 48o North Latitude and 2o East Longitude. The White House is located at Pennsylvania Ave. Relative Location Described by landmarks, time, direction or distance. From one place to another. Go 1 mile west on main street and turn left for 1 block. You are Here

27 Absolute Location Determined by imaginary grid of lines called latitude and longitude. Latitude = Fatitude Longitude = Looooong Latitude= runs north & south of the equator. Longitude= runs east & west of the prime meridian. Geographers use latitude and longitude to pinpoint a place’s absolute, or exact, location.

28 Relative Location How is the site related to other places. Geographers call this relative location. Deals with interactions that occur between and among places It refers to the many ways—land, water, even technology—that places are connected. EXAMPLE:

29 What is it like there, what kind of place is it?
IT PAINTS A PICTURE!!!! Physical Characteristics Landforms (mountains, rivers, etc.), climate, vegetation, wildlife, soil, etc. Human Characteristics What are the main languages, customs, and beliefs? How many people live, work, and visit a place?

30 Example The Great Pyramid of Giza has sand that stretches to the horizon accompanied by the scorching heat, and yet the pyramid stands out amongst it all.
