Lets say the cheetah did capture the warthog
Lets say the cheetah did capture the warthog. Will the cheetah get all the energy the warthog has ever consumed?
5
NO!
6
Remember Energy transfer- after a plant or animal uses energy for their own needs, the excess energy is available to the organism that eats the plant. Each time energy gets transferred within an ecosystem, some energy is lost, some gets used, some gets stored.
7
Heterotroph vs. Autotroph
Autotroph- organisms that can make their own energy and use it for cellular processes. (Plant and photosynthesis) Heterotroph-organism which must get its energy by eating other organisms. Cannot make own food.
8
Autotroph
10
Heterotroph
12
What are you?
13
Trophic Levels Energy gets less and less as you go up the pyramid.
14
Only 10 percent is stored in the next organism.
Energy is lost as heat and respiration.
15
Energy transfer If grass(10,000 kcal) is eaten by a grasshopper, and then the grasshopper is eaten by a fish, and then the fish is eaten by a bear. How much of the original energy did the bear get?
16
Moral of the Energy Pyramid Story
17
Moral There has to be a bunch of producers (plants)
to support just a couple predators
18
How can you maximize your energy?
19
Eating plants

Ecology 4.0 Energy
22
Balance Balance- Organisms must balance the amount of energy they use to get food with the amount of energy they gain from the food. -they have to decide if the prize is worth the effort.
23
Catch many before…..
24
Quiz If the spider uses 100 kcal to build the web, and each insect caught gives him 10 kcal, how many insects does he need to catch before it’s worth it to build a web?
25
To Nephi Would you run for 15 hours just to get a candy bar?
