Figure 2 Effects of cholera and oral rehydration solutions (ORS) on intestinal fluid movement. Note that standard ORS enhances small bowel fluid absorption and decreases cholera-induced diarrhea only slightly. However, the additional of resistant starch (RS) to ORS leads to the generation of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) in the colon. The SCFA promote colonic fluid absorption and this leads to a decrease in stool volume in patients with cholera.
