The geography of Africa has dramatically influenced its people and the way they live
Africa has geographic opposites
Sahara was a savanna at one time

Each of these environments offers different challenges and benefits
The earliest Africans were nomadic hunter-gathers who roamed from place to place seeking sources of food
Learned domestication
They then began to grow their own food, although they still hunted
More food meant more people
This allowed for the development of communities

5. Africa Many different forms of government developed
A common elements in African culture is importance of family-extended family and the religious belief in animism
Africans passed their history and stories through storyteller or griots
Two of the earliest societies in Africa and examples of these developing communities are Djenne-Djeno and Nok

Monotheistic and animists-Christian
Spoke Ge’ez and had a written language
Declined due to Islamic invaders
Moved capital and was isolated. Began to decline and had farming problems due to soil depletion

Important trade center and hub for caravan routes between Arabia and Egypt. Eventually became an international trading power
AD strong period: King Ezana captured Kush and Yemen
