AIM- What are the 2 types of respiration?
Homework-first quarter review packet due tomorrow!
2
2 Types of Respiration
3
Aerobic Respiration Oxygen is required. Occurs in the mitochondria.
36 ATP are produced. Occurs in animals and plants.
4
Structure of the mitochondria:
5
Occurs in 3 stages: 1. Glycolysis Occurs in the cytoplasm
1 glucose is broken in half to form 2 molecules of pyruvic acid. 2 molecules of ATP get glycolysis going, 4 ATP are produced in the process for a net gain of 2 ATP.
6
2. Kreb’s Cycle Occurs in the mitochondrial matrix.
Pyruvic acid gets broken down into CO2 2 ATP are produced here.
7
3. Electron Transport Chain
Occurs in the cristae A protein called ATP synthase attaches phosphates to ADP molecules forming ATP. Almost all of the ATP created during cellular respiration is produced during this step.
8
Formula: C6H12O6+6O2 6CO2+6H2O+Energy
*Reaction is controlled by a series of enzymes.
9
Anaerobic Respiration
Also known as Fermentation. Occurs in the cytoplasm. Produces 2 ATP. Occurs in some bacteria and yeast. 2 types- lactic acid fermentation and alcoholic fermentation.
10
Lactic Acid Fermentation
Glucose lactic acid + 2ATP Can occur in human muscle cells during periods of strenuous activity and oxygen deprivation. Performed by some bacteria.
11
Alcoholic Fermentation
Glucose alcohol + CO2 + 2ATP Performed by yeast and certain bacteria. Important for wine making and brewing industries.
