SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
2
What is a sedimentary rock?
Sedimentary rocks are rocks that have formed from minerals in solution crystallizing, from fragments of other rocks, or from organic processes
3
What are the 3 types of sedimentary rocks?
Clastic Chemical Organic
4
What are clastic rocks? Clastic rocks contain sediments that are cemented together with minerals
6
How do clastic rocks form?
Rocks must be broken down into small fragments This happens when preexisting rocks are weathered Fragments may be pebbles, gravels, sand, silt, clay or fossils
7
Cementation These sediments become cemented together, usually with dissolved minerals The minerals crystallize, locking the grains together
8
Cementation Process Over time, sediments are buried and compacted. After dewatering, minerals form a cement-like mixture
9
What is chemical rock? Chemical sediments form when minerals precipitate out of solution Common chemical sedimentary rocks are: -Rock salt -Gypsum -Limestone
10
What is organic rock? Organic rock consists of the remains of plants and animals
