1
Lesson Starter What is the difference between heat and temperature?
What is temperature measured in? What is heat measured in? At what point does water A) freeze? B) Boil What happens to boiling water if it is left? Why?
2
To understand how heat travels through conducting material
Learning Intention To understand how heat travels through conducting material
3
Make a mate date Draw a circle on the post it provided and mark 12 and 6 on the circle (like a clock face) You must “make a date” with two other pupils in the class- one at 12 and one at 6- write each others name down at the agreed time 12 6
4
Conduction: 12 o’clock partners
What is the meaning of the word Conductor? Think- 30 seconds think time, nobody speaking Pair- Take it in turns- listen to your partners definition before giving your own- decide together on a joint answer Share- Answers will be shared to the class

Conduction

Conduction: 6 o’clock partners
What is the meaning of the word insulator? Think- 30 seconds think time, nobody speaking Pair- Take it in turns- listen to your partners definition before giving your own- decide together on a joint answer Share- Answers will be shared to the class
7
Insulators Don’t allow heat to pass through
8
Heat Transfer (copy) Conduction occurs when two objects at different temperatures are in contact with each other. Heat flows from the warmer to the cooler object. Heat travels quickly through THERMAL CONDUCTORS. INSULATORS are materials that don’t let heat travel through them quickly.
9
Experiment Fill a beaker with boiling water
Place a metal and a plastic spoon in the water Hold the ends of the spoon Which one feels warmest?
10
Think.. What does that tell you about metals compared to plastic? I think _______ is a better conductor than _______ because _________________________________________.
11
Nicholl Bars Follow instructions given on the sheet and observe conduction in the NICHOLL BARS Which metal was the best conductor? Which was the poorest conductor?
12
Conduction Metals are good conductors, we know this because heat travelled through the metal spoon much faster than the plastic one. When we used the Nicholls bar, we seen that copper was the best conductor out of the 4 metals.
