4 What do you think of when you hear the term “emotional intelligence” or “emotion IQ?”

5 Four Corners When you hear the statement, go to the corner of the room that rings true for you. Michelle Thanks for participating in the opener. Now let’s shift gears and get a little bit deeper into emotions and gender.

7 Gender matters in what is “allowed” in expressing emotions.

8 It is okay to embrace your emotions.
Disagree Agree Strongly Disagree Strongly Agree Michelle If time permits, ask someone if they want to share with ENTIRE group (not just their corner)

9 So what does WCSD’s data say?
Edwin, data blurb. As you look at these graphs, think about how gender plays a role, how you just responded in the previous activity, and how age plays a role.

10 Climate Survey Background
24,000+ Students Grades 5 – 9 and 11 Online at school in the fall Did you know? We have 8 years of data from the three surveys! You can see your school’s report here!

Edwin Percentage of students that it is EASY or VERY EASY to stay calm when stressed

12 What percentage of students feel it is easy for them to stay calm when stressed?

13 What percentage of students feel it is easy for them to stay calm when stressed?
Edwin How we add high school (9th and 11th grades) What do the data look like now? How does this relate to the previous activity? Is this real? Or are people pressured to answer a certain way? Need to make the connection between the 4 corners

14 Busting Gender Myths Cindy takes lead on transition to busting gender myths Women are allowed and/or expected to feel all these emotions!! Look at the graph-boys report being more in control when they are stressed

15 Gender Myths: Busted Boys and girls experience the same emotions but express them differently It’s better to embrace emotions rather than pretend they aren’t there Emotions can be very useful! But don’t let emotions overwhelm you! Cindy takes lead on transition here We haven’t talked yet about embracing emotions (second bullet point) HOW can emotions be useful??? (transition to next slide)

16 Joy Sadness Disgust Activity Anger Fear

17 So, Like, I’m Majorly Emotional and that’s okay!
Using your card you received when you walked in, go to the table with the same color. Your team has 5 minutes to work through the note catcher for your table’s emotion. Be ready to share with the group Your note taker should be full when we are done! Michelle and Mindy People will go to each table to help explain the notecard Mindy and Michelle tradeoff reading bullet points Let’s talk about how we can find ways to embrace emotions Making sure one emotion doesn’t take over for too long! It’s about learning how to express emotiosn in healthy ways! Do we have strategies to help us to manage emotions? Changing emotions – malleable emotions – transition to slime Slime- if you just leave it there, nothing happens nothing changes, but when something makes it react (warmth of hand) (or if someone says something to us or something happens) it can trigger an emotion – but just like the slime we can manage it! We are in control! When you hold the slime on for too long – then all the colors and emotions will get lost because it is taking over – so don’t hodl onto things too long

18 Closer - SLIME Take a look at your slime
As you’re holding it, think about: How is SLIME like our emotions? Share with your partner Michelle - As we grow up, our bodies develop and in that same way – so is are feelings. Slime is malleable but controllable. Being emotional okay, and managing emotions in a healthy way is good!

19 Thank You!!
