Colonization of mice by the protozoan parasite Tritrichomonas musculis triggers inflammasome activation in intestinal epithelial cells, resulting in the production of IL-18. This promotes the differentiation of TH1 and TH17 cells in the gut, which leads to enhanced anti-bacterial defenses that can suppress the pathological effects of Salmonella Typhimurium infection.
