The constant gathering of officials, especially in obvious situations, gives the perception that a referee is unsure or uses others as a crutch
A common mistake is when the referee leaves the discussion and returns for more information
Minimize the amount of time two or more officials are on the screen
Conversely, over-confidence can lead to errors and an appearance that you are unapproachable

The ability to keep ourselves, our crew, and our game under control
When a referee exhibits excessive emotions, it is natural for others to question his ability to effectively control the rest of the game
Conversely, a complete void of emotion gives an air of disinterest that can be just as damaging

Strength
A presence that lets people know, “Don’t mess with my game”
A weak or timid presence undermines the credibility of the referee to manage the game
A presence that is “too forceful” diminishes the ability to effectively use that strength when necessary

A referee should never substitute style over substance
A referee who works on the periphery misses the opportunity to gain respect of those who truly matter – the players and coaches
Get involved in the trenches, take charge when necessary – don’t simply making announcements for the rest of the crew who is doing all the work.

A referee must present an image of poise, confidence, and strength to gain a sense of credibility from the audience but it must be combined with the ability to get involved in any situation in order to manage the game effectively and truly earn the respect of coaches and players.

Don’t say more than necessary, an incorrect description lowers credibility (say as much as possible using as few words as possible)
