Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
USER INTERFACES (UIs) Enable users to access complex data and functions. Global user design consists partially universal and partially local solutions. Culture – Provide insight into how designers can adjust UIs. Designed for specific user groups. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
4
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
Localization of language - Drop in customer service cost. Globalization of product - visible language and effective communication. Two Primary Objectives: To provide consistent UI. Design product and service. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
5
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
CONCEPTS OF UI Metaphor – Concepts conveyed through the words and images. Mental Models – Organization of data, functions and people in group at work. Navigation – Movement through mental models afforded by windows, menus, etc.. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
6
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
Interaction – Communication between user and system. Appearance – Tactile perceptual characteristics of displays. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design

Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
GLOBALIZATION Preparing products or services for world-wide production and consumption. Issues: - International - Intercultural - Local scales 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
8
INTERNATIONALIZATION
Preparing codes that separates the localizable data and resources. Issues - Geographic - Political - Linguistic - Typographic 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design

LOCALIZATION Customizing data and resources of code needed for specific market. Localization changes may need to consider the following: - Address formats - Date and format - Alphabetic sequence - Telephone numbers 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design

Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
EXAMPLE Item USA Examples European Examples Asian Examples Numerics 1,234.56 Telephone Numbers Address Formats Title, First Name, MI, Last Name, Department Company Number, Street, City, State, Zip-code Country Paternal Name, Maternal Name, First Name Company, Department Street, Number City, District/Region Zip-code, Country Family Name, First Name Number, Street, Neighborhood, District Zip-code, City 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
Globalization – No translation for verbal language. Local variations in order. Contacts with customer service decline. Disadvantage: Website visitors stay twice as long at local language sites as they do at English sites. Though the development cost is high, the international sales will not be decreased. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design

Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
DEVELOPMENT PROCESS Plan - Define the strategy - Establish Objectives - Determine budget, schedule ,tasks ,etc. Research - Investigate dimensions of global variable and techniques for all subsequent steps. Example: - Techniques for analysis - Criteria for evaluation. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
15
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
Analyze - Refine criteria for success in solving problems. - Globalization targets should be itemized. Design - Visualize alternative ways to satisfy criteria. - Design – based on prior or current evaluation. - Prepare documents. Implementation - Build the design to complete the final product 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
16
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
Evaluation - Review or test results in the market place against defined criteria for success. - Test Product – Revise the design Document - Record the development history , issues , guidelines. Example: German and Chinese cell phone users. Maintain: - Determine which documents requires multiple languages. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
17
CRITICAL ASPECTS FOR GLOBALIZATION
User Demographics: - Identify national and cultural target user population. - Identify potential savings in development time. - Consider legal issues in target communities. Technology: - Determine the appropriate media for the appropriate target user. Example: sounds,visual,3D……. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
18
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
Metaphors: - Determine optimum minimum number of concepts , terms , and images - Adjust metaphorical images for cultural differences. Mental Models: - Determine optimum minimum varieties of content organization. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
19
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
Navigation: - Determine need for navigation variations. Interaction: - Determine optimum minimum variations of input and output Appearance: - Determine optimum minimum variations visual and attributes. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
20
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
Visual attribute: - Layout , icons and symbols, graphics, typography, color , aesthetics. Verbal attribute: - Language ,formats , ordering sequence 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
21
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
Layout and orientation: - Adjust layout of menus, tables... For varying reading directions. Example: Roman language-left to right. Japan-right to down. - Use sentence like structure with embedded data fields. German - verbs at end of the sentence. English and French - middle of the sentence. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
22
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
Icons ,symbols, and graphics: - Avoid the use of text and punctuation. - Adjust the appearance and orientation. Typography: - Character –coding schemes differ for different language. Example: ASCII single byte – European ASCII double byte – Asian. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
23
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
Use appropriate alphabetic sequence. Example: U.S – zee. Canadian/English – zed. Color: - Follow guidelines for good color usage. Advancing elements – warm colors. Receding elements – cool colors. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
24
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
Aesthetics - Respect different aesthetic values among target values. Example: Finnish and Japanese – natural scenery. Chinese and Korean – Cartoon characters. Language and verbal style: - Language which is appropriate for the target users. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
25
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
Example: Canada – English and French India – 20 Languages. - Impact of varying languages on the length and layout of text English - Undo Dutch - Ongedaan maken English - Auto scroll Swedish - Automatisk rullning - Differences of hyphenation Bold, Italic, Quotes… 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
26
Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
SUMMARY Design of User Interfaces must be clear. Globalized products must not contain any issues. Globalized User Interface – Plan, Design, Implement , Maintain. Guidelines for checking specific tasks. 8/1/2019 Global/Intercultural User Interface Design
