1 What is Science? Chapter 1
Doing Science Scientific Method Metric System Safety in the Lab

2 Doing Science: The goal of science is to understand the world around us. We OBSERVE to gather information To INFER is to explain something based on what you already know. (it HAS happened) To PREDICT is to forecast what WILL happen. To CLASSIFY is to group according to common features. To MODEL is to make a representation of something real.

3 Kinds of Observations: Qualitative: can’t be expressed using numbers Quantitative: number or amount of something

4 Scale model: Shows the correct proportion between parts
Scale model: Shows the correct proportion between parts. Can be smaller or larger than the actual object.

5 Branches of Life Science:

6 The Scientific Method The systematic approach to problem solving.
Stating the Problem: What do you want to know? Gathering Information on the Problem: research! Forming a Hypothesis: an educated guess. Performing Experiments: test the hypothesis. Recording and Analyzing Data. Stating a Conclusion.

7 The Metric System: The standard system used by all scientists.
It is a decimal system: based on multiples of 10. Length: Meter Volume: Liter Mass: Kilogram Weight: Newton Temperature: Celsius

8 Length: 1 Meter (m) = 39.4 inches 1 Meter = 100 Centimeters (cm)
1 Meter = 1000 Millimeters (mm) 1 Kilometer (km) = 1000 meters 1 Meter = 1,000,000 Micrometers (um) 1 Meter = 1,000,000,000 Nanometers (nm) 1 Meter = 10,000,000,000 Angstroms (A) ALL MULTIPLES OF 10!

9 Volume: 1 Liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (ml)
1 Liter = 1000 cubic centimeters (cm3)

10 Mass 1 Kilogram (kg)= 1000 grams (g) 1 gram (g) = 1000 milligrams (mg)
1000 kilograms = 1 metric ton (t)

11 Temperature: 0 degrees C = Freezing point of water
100 degrees C = Boiling point of water

12 Safety in the Laboratory
Read through the lab procedure Follow Mrs. Brenner Clean up properly Wash your hands

13 If there is an accident:
NOTIFY MRS. BRENNER IMMEDIATELY!!

14 Why does this matter? 1 Corinthians 14:33 "For God is not a God of disorder but of peace." Genesis 5:1"In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God"
