1 Breakout Session Highlights: Strategies to Reduce the Cost of, and Increase Access to Legal Education and Entry to the Profession Summit on the Future of Legal Education and Entry to the Profession April 12-13, 2018 Florida International University College of Law

2 The following ideas and proposals emerged from six the breakout group discussions:
Move away from, disregard, or undermine USNWR Move towards a law school model similar to the medical school model E.g., incorporate apprenticeships into the legal education model Think creatively about leveraging relationships with the bar to implement clinics at scale Expand clinical programs by developing niche law firms within schools to train students as well as bring in revenue Review faculty and staff salaries Expand law school pipeline programs Count credits earned in the first year of law school toward the last year of the undergraduate degree, reducing from 7 to 6 years the time required to earn the BA and JD degrees Educate alumni, donors, and foundations to condition funds on school adhering to equitable financial aid policies Establish certification mechanism to recognize schools that adhere to progressive, need-based aid policies

3 Increase efficiency by promoting collaboration among law schools such as sharing course offerings and student services E.g. Offer joint online courses Use technology to increase career opportunities available to students Reward law schools that innovate Continue the dialogue concerning the constraints on change (e.g., law school governance, professional culture, etc.) Explore perceived untouchables such as years required for the JD degree, faculty tenure, USNWR) Create satellite offices for law schools to increase national reach and reduce costs in different markets Partner with the profession to implement change (including working with CLOC, tech providers, the Big 4, etc.) Eliminate the LSAT
