Physics Vocab Day October 12, 2017
3
Objective SWBAT: understand the necessary vocabulary to discuss the laws of physics
4
Connection Today we are going to start a very
short unit on physics. In 8th grade, you will be learning the basics about physics, which are Newton’s Three Laws. However, this content will be expanded on in high school science classes so it is important to have a good understanding of these topics.
5
Vocab Words and Definitions
Motion – a change in position over time Inertia – the resistance of any physical object to change its state of motion Force – any interaction that will change the motion of an object (cause it to accelerate)
6
Vocab Words and Definitions
Velocity – the rate and direction of motion (in other words “speed”) Acceleration – the rate at which an object changes its velocity Friction – the resistance to motion that one object has in relation to another
7
Vocab Words and Definitions
Mass – the amount of matter that makes up an object Balanced Forces – two individual forces of equal magnitude and in the opposite direction, so the object does not move Unbalanced Forces – two individual forces that are not equal, and therefore the object moves

Vocabulary Graphic Organizers
Write the vocabulary word in the middle Write the definition in the top box (actual definition or put it in your own words, either is fine) Use the word in a sentence in the bottom left box (needs to be a meaningful sentence that demonstrates understanding) Give an example in the bottom right box (could be a written example, or draw a picture) Word: Definition: Sentence: Example:
