What are principles that guide your life?
What are some basic ideas or rules you live by? For me these basic principles guide my life: 1. Treat others the way I want to be treated 2. Tell and show my family and friends the “I love them” 3. Financially live within my means 4. Eat well, exercise often and get enough sleep 5. Find joy in the little things 6. Learn from my mistakes and do not repeat them.

Principle 1: the people rule
America will have…. Popular sovereignty: People hold the final authority Representative Government: Government in which people indirectly exercise power by electing leaders (voting)

Principle 2: limited government
Government has powers granted by the people People give the government its power If people do not like the way government is working they can take the power away Rule of Law – Both those who govern (leaders) and those who are governed (people) must obey the law - No one is above the law Government limited by the Constitution (written document) Man is not free unless government is limited “ Ronald Reagan

Principle 3: federalism Division of power between levels of government
I. National (Federal) Government a. Delegated(listed) powers in Constitution b. Deals with National issues II. State Government a. Reserved (leftover) powers – any powers not granted to the federal government are given to states b. Deals with local issues (Amendment 10) III. Concurrent Powers – powers shared by both the national and state governments(ex. taxes)

PRINCIPLE 5: CHECKS AND BALANCES
LEGISLATIVE (CONGRESS) – passes bill that President can sign into law or veto (reject) (Executive checking Legislative) EXECUTIVE (PRESIDENT) – can veto bills; Congress can override veto with 2/3 vote of both houses; Congress can impeach President (Legislative checking Executive) JUDICIAL (COURTS) – President appoints judges approved by Senate; Supreme Court can propose changes to the Constitution and overturn court decisions (Executive Checking Judicial; Judicial checking Legislative
