Welcome to this workshop on storytelling and more! Using storytelling is a developmentally appropriate approach for teaching young learners, and children love to listen to and tell stories! This workshop will give you an opportunity to share your favorite stories with each other and learn about the power of storytelling for teaching young learners English.

Small Group Discussion
What stories do your students know and love? Why are these stories good for young learners? Small Group Discussion Preview 2 Distribute Handout 3.1. First, let’s see what kinds of stories you already use in class. On your handout, write the names of your students’ favorite stories. Put participants in small groups. Share your lists of stories. You can add stories to your list. Explain to your group why these stories are good for young learners of English. Have participants share their lists, and ask one or two to explain their stories if they are not familiar to others. Participants should share the name of the story and one way it is good for young learners.

Video Now we’ll watch an introduction to using storytelling with students who are learning English. Listen for ways that storytelling supports English learning. Play the video.

Paired Discussion Name a cultural value that can be expressed through one of the stories on your list. Review 2 Storytelling can be used in class to communicate culture and values from one generation to the next. Turn to your partner and name one cultural value that can be expressed through one of the stories on your list. Ask one or two participants to share an example of a cultural value in one of the stories from their list.
