Grade 7 Novel Study The Crazy Man by Pamela Porter

The Crazy Man ASSIGNMENT: Rough work to be completed in your English scribbler throughout the novel study. Ultimately, you will complete a good copy on white paper with a cover page (Cover should include your name, novel name, illustration, due date, etc.) Select any two of the many visually descriptive passages from the novel and draw a picture to represent each. Be sure to include the caption (Direct quotation from the book) under the picture. Outcome SCO 9.3 demonstrate an understanding that ideas can be represented in more than one way (i.e. Illustrations to show visual imagery/descriptive writing)

2. Find examples in the novel of the common literary devices we have been examining. (When you find one, copy the section of text and tell what it is an example of.) Outcome SCO 9.2 recognize that a writer’s choice of form is influenced by purpose and audience. (i.e. This novel has an interesting style/form of writing and uses lots of literary devices!) (Was able to locate and provide examples!) We covered 19 different devices in class… you’ve done a good job learning these! You can do this!! Tip: As you/we are reading, look/listen for examples! Jot down the page # so you will be able to relocate the example!!

The Crazy Man 3. Make two lists. One list will include the things Emaline knew about her Dad and the other will include what she knew about Angus the ‘Crazy man’. You need to find these in the story and then copy them into your scribbler. Then, include two things of your own for each character. Outcome SCO 8.3 understand that note-making is purposeful and has many purposes (e.g., personal use, gathering information for an assignment, recording what has happened, etc.) and many forms (e.g., lists, summaries, observations, and descriptions) i.e. Is able to locate specific information from text.

Have you been actively participating in the reading of the novel?? Outcome SCO 4.1 read widely and experience a variety of young adult fiction and literature from different provinces and countries (Participation during the reading of the novel.)

The Crazy Man 4. Select 3 ‘power’ sentences from the story. Copy them (use quotation marks and record the page #) and tell why you chose each. Outcome SCO 9.2 recognize that a writer’s choice of form is influenced by purpose and audience. (i.e. This novel has an interesting style/form of writing and the free verse format allows for impactful sentences! Was able to locate and provide examples!)

The Crazy Man 5. What themes are explored in The Crazy Man? * Since we are reading this together we will have lots of opportunities for discussion throughout the book. This will assist you in determining the key themes (morals, lessons learned, issues explored) in this story. * You will also be provided with some support with this question near the end of our reading. Outcome SCO 6.3 find evidence and examples in texts to support personal views, themes, and situations (i.e. (Theme is often a challenge…morals/lessons/issues learned are understood.)

The Crazy Man Complete a good copy of your work. * As always, this is your chance to consolidate you work into a format that focuses on quality and overall appearance of your work. Outcome SCO 9.4 develop the awareness that content, writing style, tone of voice, language choice, and text organization need to fit the reader and suit the reason for writing (i.e. Focus on organization and appearance of your completed work; a good copy!)
