Do Now: Answer one of the following questions. 1.) What are fences (barriers, divisions) or people pursuing the American Dream in today’s news? Explain. 2.) What can you predict will be the resolution/ending of Wilson’s play, Fences? Objective: Students will be able to analyze the symbolism of fences and the characters’ pursuits of the American Dream in Wilson’s play, Fences.

Wednesday, April 17th, 2019 Aim: How can we analyze the symbolism of fences, the theme of the American Dream, and the resolution in Act 2, Scene 5 in August Wilson’s play, Fences? Objective:: Students will be able to analyze the symbolism of fences, the theme of the American Dream, and the resolution in Act 2, Scene 5 in the play, Fences. Agenda A.) Do Now: Turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will prepare to share their tablemates’ answers with the whole class. B.) Discuss/Share: -Captains will share Do Now answers. C.) Read-Aloud/Analysis: Read aloud Act 2, Scene 5 (pp ). Character Roles: Stage directions, Lyons, Rose, Cory, Troy, Bono, Raynell and Gabriel. Why do you believe there was a fence between Cory and Raynell? What broke down that fence? Why has Cory built a higher fence between himself and Troy (after he has died)? What was Troy’s American Dream for Cory? What was Rose’s American Dream? What was Gabriel’s American Dream? D.) Reflections: What were your impressions of the play’s ending? What do you believe was the playwright’s message to his audience?
